5 out of 5 stars Fun for kids (even ones over thirty!) ^_^   August 21, 2007

As an adult toy collector, I find that toys are getting more and more complex, while providing less and less enjoyment. And sturdiness is a thing of the past. So I find myself gravitating towards quality "childrens'" toys like the Lift Off Rocket. And this particular toys doesn't disappoint!

The Rocket comes with four figures (2 astronauts, 1 dog, 1 alien), a moon buggy (for the astronauts), a crater (for the astronauts or alien), and the rocket itself. All parts are sturdy without sacrificing play value. It is obvious that a lot of thought went into the design of the various elements, as nifty details abound.

The buggy has large, rubber wheels and easily stores in the bottom compartment of the rocket. The door hinges downward and has two grooves in it, so it makes a perfect ramp for the buggy. There are some simple, yet elegant details in the buggy bay that would have been left out of a cheaper toy (floor details, some wall decorations). My only complaint with the buggy is the inability of fitting the alien in there (his footprint is too large).

The crater is deceptively fun. It is a simple piece, yet it immediately creates a "moonscape" atmosphere wherever you place it. Plus (and this is probably unintentional), if you decide to store all the other pieces inside the rocket, you can place the crater beneath the ship for a somewhat realistic "fire" backsplash effect.

The rocket is a work of art. This is the rocket we dreamed of as kids, before the messy details of reality were a concern. The main cabin door hinges to the side and has its own floor, increasing the play space when it swings out. Kids will recognize elements from their own homes inside: a toaster, a microwave, shelves with cups and food containers, a coffee maker, many drawers, etc. None of these move or "work" in any way, but they add a great bit of character to the capsule. On the door, you have a bedroom with murphy bed, nightstands, books, and a lamp. Flip the bed up, and you have a toilet with back tank, tp dispenser, the works! The cockpit holds both astronauts (or the dog in place of one astronaut!) and has some relief detailing of controls and limited stickers. The nicest feature is that the astronauts sit in the correct position (on their backs) when the rocket is standing up. There are two sound effects triggered by a button on the handle: a countdown to launch plus launch or a generic electric sound. There is a 3-position switch (located on the OUTSIDE and easy for kids to manage) that turns the sounds off, low volume, or high volume.

Don't let the price scare you on this one. It is very clear that i-Play spent the money on quality construction and thoughtful design. The rocket feels substantial--there is nothing "cheap" about it.

I gave my 4 year old grandson this gift for his birthday and he was wild about it. It seems very sturdy, has room for imagination and even though it needs 2 AA batteries, it needed no batteries for him to start playing with it once I got it out of the box. His 2 1/2 year old brother was happy to play with some of the characters as well and they immediately started off with their rocket adventure. The small pieces were not so small as to worry me with the younger child and they were sturdy enough to withstand a momentary bout with the year old retriever who wanted to get in on the play. Once we dipped it in hot soapy water to clean it off, it was as good as new and ready for play.

I'm very glad I purchased this item for my grandson.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent toy   August 23, 2007

The picture on this toy does not do it justice. It's the perfect rocket ship for children age 1 1/2, 18 months, to at least 5. It's very solid, big, has noises (two types) and lights up. It has very few parts and those that are attached to the ship, the doors, come off very easily so they can be attached back very easily. Also, only a few extra parts, like the people and the dog, but they all fit in the rocket so you don't lose them.
The only caveat is the alien that doesn't fit in the ship and really is kind of boring looking. My children immediately dismissed it.
But really, I can't believe this rocket ship isn't known about more but when trying to do a search on rocket ship I can see that it doesn't show up so finding that it even existed took quite a long while.
I'm so glad I found it, as are my two boys.

5 out of 5 stars It's a hit!   November 21, 2007

Parents, grandparents, godparents, aunts and uncles, buy this toy for your kids. It's the International Playthings Lift-Off Rocket. You can get it on Amazon. It's an awesome toy your kids will actually play with! I bought this for my three year old son for his birthday and plays with it daily. Even my six year old loves to play with it!

It's well constructed, durable and comes with an off-switch. Forget those crappy licensed toys (Dora, Elmo, etc.). THIS toy is worth your money!

No, I don't work for this toy company. I just love this toy that much and I'm sick of all the crappy toys you find it major retail stores these days.

5 out of 5 stars Infinate Fun   May 4, 2007

I don't know who is more excited about this toy, me or my son. Little kids just love doors to open and stick things in. Of course cars end up doing most of the play in all his toys but we are loving the little people and the great sounds. The doors could be a little easier for him to open but I've been opening them the first time and then he just doesn't close them all the way. I'm sure he'll learn to pull a little harder to get them open and they break away and easily snap back in. So the doors aren't going to get broken off like they do on other toys. A ben flips up and down which is tons of fun. Love it.
